The radio
Agencies are monitored with a RadioShack PRO-197 scanner that is connected to a DPD Productions OmniX multi-band antenna. The scanner sends audio to a dbx 166xs compressor/limiter/gate; the 166xs provides full quieting between radio transmissions and allows a higher overall audio level. Audio is then sent to a Hewlett-Packard TouchSmart laptop via a Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202 audio interface. The scanner provides alpha tag metadata to the thin client over a RadioShack USB-PC cable, and the thin client uses RadioFeed to send the audio & alpha tags to Broadcastify. Alpha tags are available only in media players which support such tags; examples include Winamp and VLC Media Player.
Feed miscellany
The scanner, compressor, and thin client run on utility power, which is backed up by a two-stage uninterruptible power supply consisting of a battery and an automatic standby generator. In the event of a utility power outage, the feed will stay up as long as my ISP's network remains online.
Additional comments
You can also listen to the feed on the go with your iOS or Android device! Just download Gordon Edwards' FREE Scanner Radio app (highly recommended, and supports alpha tags!), which is available from the App Store and Google Play.
